CLEANING UP YOUR ACT: WHERE THERE'S SMOKE... THERE ARE FREE RADICALS - SOME LATE-BREAKING BULLETINS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED
Here are some late-breaking bulletins you might have missed:
• Even a few puffs hurt women's hearts.
So says a new study from Harvard University's School of Medicine that found females smoking as few as one to four cigarettes a day doubled their risk of heart attack.
• Women who smoke are nearly 3 1/2 times more likely to develop cervical cancer as non-smokers, and the risk is almost as great for women living with smokers. Dr. Martha Slattery of the University of Utah Medical School, whose study turned up the unexpected finding, pointed out they had previously thought that it was the number of sex partners and early onset of sexual activity that was the link with cervical cancer. Said the researcher: "Now we know it's smoking, not sex, that is the real deadly sin."
• Smoking interferes with breast-feeding, according to a new study. Norwegian researchers have found that 40 percent of babies breast-fed by smoking mothers had colic - they cried for more than two hours a day for no apparent reason. Smoking mothers were also more likely to give up breast-feeding because of 'too little milk'.
• Smokers risk Crohn's disease - an ulcerative colitis. Again, women are more at risk than male smokers.
• Smokers suffer aching muscles. A Scandinavian study supported earlier findings in the U.S. thatlinked smoking with lower back pain and other musculoskeletal problems as well.
• Smokers take more sick leave. Researchers in Missouri uncovered a 23% higher absenteeism from smoking employees, with male smokers, older than 40 or unmarried, the most likely to call in sick.
• Smoking can stunt your career. Your chance of becoming a company bigwig can go up in a puff of smoke, according to a survey by Robert Half International that found non-smokers are more apt to hold the top jobs in any company. Only 22 percent of the top guns at 100 of the largest corporations in America are smokers against 71 percent of their lower echelon employees.
