Swedish researchers are years ahead of American scientists on this issue. They've developed a 24-hour urine test that establishes the diagnosis of chronic mercury poisoning that formerly could only be made by post-mortem brain autopsy. This test is not yet available in the U.S. The Swedes have also taken the lead when it comes to banning mercury amalgam fillings. Sweden's foremost politicians, recognizing the documented health threatmercury poses, vowed "No more amalgam after 1991."
According to Sweden's Mats Hanson, Ph.D., a leader in the anti-amalgam movement, some people react so severely to mercury, they are almost totally incapacitated. Not long ago, Dr. Hanson reported the link between micromercuralism and multiple sclerosis.
As Dr. Hanson has stated: "The use of amalgam as a dental filling must cease. Amalgam contains mercury, which when dissolved into the human body, even in small amounts, precipitates such health problems as tiredness, lack of appetite, infections, joint and muscle pain, gastrointestinal and concentration disturbances. At higher levels of toxicity, there will be behavioral and personality changes. Also the immune system can be affected since certain white blood cells are reduced in number. There is also the potential for reduced kidney function."
In 1985, the Swedish Health and Welfare Board appointed a group of experts to examine the risk of low-level exposure to mercury. Their determination: mercury amalgam is an unsuitable dental filling from a toxicological point of view and should be discontinued - especially for pregnant women where there is a strong risk of fetal damage.
